Trim was the first town I visited in Ireland. It has a castle, old town walls, ruins of an abbey, a priory and the tower from an old hospital.

Trim Town Walls and the Sheep Gate

I spent a lot of time exploring Trim Castle, the largest English Norman castle in Ireland.

I wandered along the River Boyne. The ruins of the town walls are there, lost along the fields around the castle. You can see how the stones were each shaped. The wall circled the entire original town.

The ruins near the castle are Newtown Abbey and St. John’s Priory. There are also remains of a tower, which used to be part of a hospital.

The town had very narrow roads. There is a monument to the Duke of Wellington. The Duke of Wellington was Irish. He was born in Dublin and educated in Trim. The column was erected in 1817, two years after his defeat of Napoleon.
