Below are just some of our websites. Take a look at these sites to get an idea of what we can bring to your project.
Lesley Rohe Realtor®
Lesley Rohe is a real estate broker. Although the real estate company she works with provides her with a website, she wanted to make it easier for potential clients to find her.
Lesley wrote excellent copy and provided really high quality photos. We put it together with the Sela WordPress Theme. Her site was completed quickly and on budget.
The site provides all the information a prospective client needs to choose her as your buyer's agent or to sell your home. There are client reviews, imbedded video and links to the MLS.
Lesley helped my daughter buy her house, sold our house in just a little over a month and dropped everything to rush an offer in on the land we are building on. If she had been any slower the offer just half an hour later would have been accepted.
Goodfellas Car Detailing
Goodfellas Car Detailing is a mobile car wash and car detailing company in Hendersonville. They were already a successful business, with regular clients in Asheville, Hendersonville and Brevard. They had started building their own website using WIX, but were running into trouble.
WIX is a WYSIWYG website builder that is supposed to be easier to use than WordPress. We had never worked with WIX before, but we were confident we could help Goodfellas finish their site.
The site really didn't have any words. We started by looking at the on-line presence of similar local businesses, car washes and car detailers in the Western North Carolina area. They travel to people's homes and businesses as far as Saluda, so we looked at companies in the mountains of North Carolina and the upstate region of South Carolina.
Although we've had our cars cleaned at the local car wash and by car detailers, we really didn't know a lot about the business. We learned more about how cars are correctly cleaned. We also made sure to learn how it's done wrong, so we could reassure site visitors that Goodfellas Car Detailing does it right. The biggest complaint was the wax, protectants and residue left. Goodfellas not only doesn't leave residue, they clean up and restore cars after other companies.
Goodfellas had a lot of great photos of clean cars and some great before and after photos. We just decided which pages to put them on.
In this case the client had already done a lot of the work. We just worked by the hour to write some copy and put it all together.

1898 Waverly Inn
1898 Waverly Inn is the oldest surviving inn in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Growing up in nearby Brevard, Carla has always loved the Inn. She was delighted to meet one of the owners at a local business event and has been working on various projects for them ever since. This site already existed and was being maintained by Debbie Jones.
Since 2014, Carla has contracted to work regularly. Carla has redesigned the existing site to be compatible with phones and tablets, while keeping much of the original look. She has rewritten most of the copy on the site.
The job has grown to include social media. Carla takes photos and writes posts for Facebook, which also go out on Twitter. IRELAND - A Different Visit
This is a blog I created to experiment with some of the features in WordPress. And to monetize my trip to Ireland. This blog demonstrates some of the features of WordPress. It is currently using the Hemingway Theme by Anders Noren.
The Underground World of Caves
This is the very first website I ever designed. I recently updated it and turned it into a blog to demonstrate some of the features of WordPress. It is currently using the Spacious Theme by ThemeGrill.
I experimented with linking to the style sheets and scripts from .html pages for a consistent look and feel between the blog and the site pages, without having to give up the page names that have a lot of incoming links.
This was a school project, originally completely hand coded, demonstrating every tag available in markup at the time. It is just a personal site, personal photography from the '90s. I researched and wrote original copy on caving. This continues to get very high traffic. A lot of other sites have linked to it.
In 2007, a copyright lawyer contacted me about the content on this site. The words and photos were being used by other companies. I was able to prove this is my work. (I have the original photos that I had scanned in.) They prosecuted the copyright infringers and paid me.
Wikipedia defines a copyright troll as a "person or company that enforces copyrights... for purposes of making money through litigation, in a manner considered unduly aggressive or opportunistic, generally without producing or licensing the works it owns for paid distribution."
Worked out for me. Don't steal other people's work. Don't use photos you did not take yourself of buy from a reputable site.
Tore's Home is an assisted living center in Brevard, NC. We used the existing web content, which was edited by the client. The site now looks modern and professional.
I recreated their logo from the photo of it on their van. The site includes information about all of their programs. The home page uses a simple Flash to show a variety of the homes. The site uses a combination of original photos of the facilities and stock photography.
The style sheet displays the fonts in the sizes the visitor sets. Since site visitors are likely to be older, the fonts are larger and easier to see.
Web production, Dania Boat, the largest Yamaha dealer in the United States. Dania Boat does an international business and wanted to be able to display the current product lines. This site speaks for itself. Intense graphical appeal and cutting edge technology.
Below are some of the alternate designs.
Carla Kirby designed and maintains this web site. The web site began in about 1999 as a simple 4 page site. Later, Carla negotiated performance-based compensation. She has added to and modified the site, writing unique copy and using copy and photos made available by the manufacturers of the products sold on the site. The site is now well over 1000 pages, managed using Dreamweaver. She searches out and makes available all of the information a site visitor needs to make a purchasing decision, creating graphics where none are available. She silhouettes photos where necessary and adds blown up or detail view photos. By subscribing to architecture, decorating and interior design magazines, she keeps up with current trends and terminology in order to keep the copy and content of the site up to date and relevant. She organizes all of the products and links them to facilitate add-on purchases. She tracks Web Analytics and Web Site Statistics, adjusting the site to create consistent site traffic and sales. Using Crazy Egg to track where visitors are clicking and where they are not, she edits and improves the site to make it the successful sales tool that it is. The site uses CSS for page layout and text styling.
Green Ant Builds
Beau Houde Construction
This portfolio site for Beau Houde is a great example of what can be done at a low cost. The site features before and after photos of construction and remodeling work. Collateral Package for Blue-Tap
I started playing with a blog a few years ago, mostly to learn WordPress. I can write whatever I want, since it is my own site. I make money from the site by monetizing the links.
WordPress is web software you can use to create websites or blogs. It is open source. The core software is built by hundreds of community volunteers. There are thousands of plugins and themes available to do a lot of the designing for you. It has advantages and disadvantages. This site currently uses a very modified version of the Bouquet Theme by Automattic.
If you want to edit your site yourself, WordPress is an excellent option. We have set up quite a few sites using WordPress. They are not in the portfolio, since we did not do much of the work.
Carla writes the copy for this site to drive traffic to www.deepdiscountlighting.com. It's been quite effective.
Complete package including website with some copywriting, grapic design, image research and logo development.
We found four coordinating images that didn't cost too much from istockphoto.com. We designed a Tri-fold brochure with space for an address that can be sealed and mailed out. The business card includes a QR Code (Quick Response Code) that links to the website. The flyer can be printed, distrubuted as a PDF white paper or as an email. I gave the client a copy as a Word Template with the graphics in the header and footer, so she can easily create new flyers with the same look and feel. They are all developed to be easily used with a local printer or using VistaPrint. The logo can be used with brand supporting colors or as black & white.

Developed using clients existing photos. Uses PayPal.
Finally did a black site.
What's Mine Is Yours Foundation
The What's Mine Is Yours Foundation brings joy and hope to those children less fortunate through illness, position in life or other circumstances. Children's minds will be enlightened with the empowerment that comes through giving one of their own gifts - from their hearts - and sharing it with others less fortunate. They will see and realize the impact they can favorably make on children's lives through sharing, and they will learn that the spirit of giving has no boundaries.
Jane Nerf designed this site and wrote all of the copy. I followed her instructions for a clean, simple site that does it's job.
Cocoa Beach Oceanfront Rental
This site is a great example of what can be done at a low cost. The clean graphic design using text links enhances search engine findability and loads fast on any connection. The banner is Flash and loads at only 16K. Flash includes an animated Png with full alpha transparency layers and an Mpg sound stream. Carla Kirby developed the site for Write Results. Later we added the virtual tour. Photos were taken by Carla and the client.
Rene Houde Painting
This 2 page site for Rene Houde is another great example of what can be done at a very low cost. Rene Houde had his work featured in a number of magazines. This site gives him the opportunity to showcase these articles as PDFs, letting prospective clients see his work.
Carla scanned the magazine articles, removed unnecessary parts of each page, cleaned up the image and published them as PDF on the site.

Marine Industries Association of South Florida
design42 New Media Web Design designed and developed the front end of this site. It was designed to be easily searchable. All pages were within printing parameters. We developed forms so emails could be sent directly to local, state and national representatives to challenge government regulations or legislation that might impact South Florida's recreational marine industry. This facilitated MIASFs legislative advocacy goals. News feeds were imbedded to monitor comments and news and events of interest to members.
www.goboating.org is the public web site for Marine Industries Association of South Florida. www.miasf.org is the site for members. MIASF is a not for profit organization to promote the boating industry in South Florida.
Carla designed this site while she was learning web design. It is just a personal site. Personal photography is mixed with stock photos. She researched and wrote original copy on wildlife and conservation efforts. This continues to get very high traffic. A lot of other sites have linked to it.
Below are some of the projects design42 team members have worked on.
Countrywide's "Site Builder"
Carla worked on Countrywide's "Site Builder" Templates, which broker customers used to build their own web site. Carla designed a template and sample websites that could be used within a dynamic application. By using various style sheets and graphical elements of the same size, web pages were assembled using an .asp application and customized by the end user. Carla developed various designs, each in varous color schemes, with graphic choices and color and font variations.
She also worked on Countrywide's Web-based service, Countrywide Wholesale Business Channel (CWBC). CWBC is a web site that broker customers can use to originate loans.
saves an estimated $4 million per year.
Countrywide now offers a function called "Site Builder," which broker customers can use to build their own web site. Countrywide would like to use WebEx to train their employees on the most effective way to sell "Site Builder" and answer broker questions about the service. Countrywide sees it as a way of making a potentially complicated process remarkably simple.
(PDF will open in a new window)
While Carla worked freelance for Fusive in Boca Raton, she was on the team that cleaned up content from all of the state of Florida's existing web sites to give a consistent look and feel to the new State of Florida portal site. The team was able to complete the assignment on a very short deadline. It was an exciting project, culminating with Governor Jeb Bush unveiling the site live on television in front of more than a thousand media professional and IT executives.
Carla worked directly for Océ, "a global leader in digital document management and delivery technology offering software solutions, digital printers, copiers, plotters and scanners." She worked with a team using Blue Martini to maintain a dynamic web site and intranet site. Working with Jane Nerf from Write Results, Carla updated site graphics for consistency and accuracy and published Friday Flash, the regular in-house employee newsletter delivered by email. Jane and Carla worked with Sales and Marketing to support tradeshows such as On Demand, Graph Expo, Xplor, drupe and TransPromo with collateral and advertising campaigns. We developed email marketing campaigns, developed banner ads, including Flash banners, updated the events, news and home page, PDFs and web site copy.
Email Campaigns and Landing Pages for Emtex and Pitney Bowes
Carla worked in the graphic art department at diamond.com. While there she had the opportunity to work with very experience graphic artists and greatly improved her Photoshop skills. Carla's primary job was to clean and silhouette photos of jewelry. The team developed techniques to ensure consistent and accurate appearance of all jewels and metal colors. She cleaned and optimized scanned documents for on-line presentation. She developed a "look and feel" for e-mail newsletters and other email advertising. Working with the marketing department and being included in planning meetings, she learned a lot about marketing and advertising. She also developed a graphical interface for the parent company, Odimo corporate Intranet.
Before AT&T was Bellsouth, Carla worked for Randstadt on the prototype AT&T web site for Latin America. She developed a working web site model for use in meetings between the web development firm and representatives of AT&T. This small prototype site was used to test navigation options. The model site included functioning image maps, rollovers, and complex table effects to be filled dynamically. It gave examples of different pages for different areas of the new site. Decision makers used this model web site to make changes and sign off without wasting too much time or getting too elaborate.
