Flash
The main appeal of Flash is its ability to combine
and manipulate objects to make animated movies with
astonishingly small file sizes.
Whether your project is an entire interface or an isolated
animation, Flash has distinct advantages over alternatives
like Gif animation and DHTML.
Flash files are drawn using vectors, not bitmaps. Vectors
(lines and curves) are more efficient at rendering some
kinds of images than are pixels. That means smaller
file sizes and faster downloads. That means your viewers
see more faster.
Vectors also can up or down size without losing quality
or increasing file size.
The downside is that your visitors must have the plug-in
to view the files. Fortunately millions have downloaded
it and all of the newer browsers come with it already
installed.
In fact, now there is Macromedia Flash Lite, a new
profile that has been developed for mobile phones. Flash
Lite uses Macromedia 5 objects and Flash 4 ActionScript.
Flash Lite is currently used in all NTT DoCoMo i-mode
series mobile phones. Flash on phones! Wow!
Flash isn't for every site. Some web sites are more
informational than entertaining. Flash is more difficult
to update than HTML. If you need a fully database-driven
site, then it would be more difficult to use Flash.
Flash now prints with remarkably high quality, best
if the print function must is imbedded into the movie.
With older browsers the print button on the browser
doesn't work.
It depends on your potential audience. A little market
research will help you decide if this is the best solution
for your sites unique needs. Use Flash where it will
benefit your business.
