The painting and the cover of the book are of Diana Mitford, Desmond Guinness’ mother.

Diana Mitford was one of the controversial Mitford sisters. Raised in an upper-class family, the six stylish sisters shocked society with their provocative political and social views and at times scandalous lifestyles.

Diana Mitford was secretly engaged to Bryan Walter Guinness, one of the heirs to the Guinness Beer fortune, when she was 18. Although her family initially resisted, they hosted the wedding of the year in 1929. They shared a fortune in income and were known for hosting extravagant bohemian society parties. Their circle, the “Bright Young Things” were known for drinking, drug experimentation and masquerades.  Think the De Momerie crowd in the Lord Peter Wimsey mystery Murder Must Advertise by Dorothy Sayers.

The book with the green cover is about Diana Mitford’s sister Nancy. The drawing on that cover is also by William Acton.
